We all have those moments when we want to give up.

The overwhelm, the feeling of being just not good enough, that we’re getting nowhere and wasting our time.

Sinking into that spiral of negativity, fear and shame that we just can’t do this!

That it would be better for everyone if we just admit defeat and go and get a JOB.

These thoughts hit us all at times. Worse when we’re tired. Or when we’re facing that next level of uncomfortable growth.

When we start comparing ourselves to others.

Listening to everyone else and losing ourselves.

Feeling chaos where there was calm.

Building a business is a long journey. It can be boring and frustrating and sometimes feels like we’re going backwards instead of forwards.

We want to leap, to fly, to be in that far distant future that we dreamed of. Right now!

But it really is made up of small steps, of doing things consistently, every day, week, month and year.

Of trying new things, learning what works and what doesn’t.

Of taking the lessons learned and applying them.

Of taking one step forward, two steps back!

I wish I could say that you can get rid of that feeling forever. But I can’t.

What I can give you are some reminders of what helps to push through it.

To get your mind back on track, calm and focused again on where you’re going again.

Take a break from it.

Sometimes easier said than done, when you’re running around, trying to do “everything”, especially if you’re trying to do it all yourself.
But science and experience shows us that taking time off from work, even when you love it, will rejuvenate your body and your mind.
Schedule in some time away from work and allow yourself to take a breath, to catch up, to chill out and relax without guilt!

Get your journal out.

And start writing.
It doesn’t have to be in any kind of order, write what you feel, the good, the bad and the ugly. No-one has to see it.
The physical act of writing helps to organise your thoughts, work out what’s causing all those negative emotions and put them into perspective.
Get all the stuff cluttering up your mind and emotions out on the page and it’s much easier to figure out what’s really going on!

Remember why you’re doing this.

In the everyday of life, the rush of doing all the things, it’s easy to forget why we started.
The dream of a better life.
Of doing what you love.
But you started a business for a reason. Whether that’s because you want to change the world, support your family or just to be happy!
It’s your dream, your why, your vision of the future that will give you the strength to keep going.
Write about it, talk about it, think about it, every day if that’s what it takes.
If you’re not sure what to journal about, start there.
With the dream that got you going. What does that life really look like to you?

Remember just how far you’ve come.

Write down all that you’ve already achieved. Because if you’ve started a business, then it’s already a bloody lot!
List out everything that you’ve learnt, all the challenges and obstacles you’ve overcome, the things that you now know.
It’s too easy to just look at where we’re trying to get to and forget all the work we’ve put in to get there.

Make a list of all the pros and cons

What do you love about your business and what do you hate?
What’s hard right now and what are the things you find easy?
And then think about how you can do more of what you love and find easy and less of what you hate or find hard.
This is the start of doing something about it!
Think about whether it’s something you need to get someone else to do or make simpler and easier.
Even if you can’t do it right now, you can start making a plan for the future and taking action to resolve it.
Which will make you feel better!
Give yourself permission to stop, breathe, take a break and reconnect with your purpose and joy.
Come back recharged, enthusiastic and feeling your creativity again.
Then make a simple plan to move forward and start taking the practical steps to ditch the overwhelm for good!
